Since there are literally hundreds of applicants vying for the same one position these days, landing that first interview (whether via phone or in-person) is a great step in the right direction; it affirms that your networking skills and/or the design and wording of your resume were so outstanding that the potential employer felt compelled to speak with you. The next step —securing the second interview—is both the most informative and important step for you. A second interview silently states that you were as notable as your resume, that you had an impressive first interview, and that you have something to offer the company; unfortunately, however, not everyone makes it through to Round 2. Here are several job interview tips to help you avoid some common reasons why many applicants do not get invited to the 2nd interview.
Job Interview Tip #1: Do some research about the company before your interview. If, when you are asked, you don’t know why the company ought to hire you, don’t expect a second interview.
Job Interview Tip #2: Dress appropriately for the interview. If you show up for an interview sporting the same outfit you would wear to an afternoon lounging on a Catamaran, don’t expect a second interview.
Job Interview Tip #3: Have a firm handshake. Plain and simple—if your handshake is sweaty and limp, don’t expect a second interview.
Job interview Tip #4: Arrive at the interview prepared with a handful of appropriate questions. If you ask the interviewer, “How much does this position pay?” don’t expect a second interview.
Job Interview Tip #5: Arrive for the interview 15 minutes early. If you show up even one minute late for your first interview, don’t expect a second interview.
Job Interview Tip #6: Send a thank you note. The fact that the company invited you (of the hundreds of candidates) for a first interview is worthy of a snail-mailed thank you note back to them. If you can’t take a moment to follow-up and thank the interviewer(s) for the opportunity, don’t expect a second interview.
While there are lots of reasons beyond your control why you may not get invited to a second interview (perhaps the company already knows the person they are going to bring on board and are now just going through the motions), there are steps you can take—within your control– to increase your chances for a second interview.
