Your Coworker Wants to Get You Fired
No matter where you work or what you do, you will most likely come in contact with (or have to work alongside) a coworker who wants to get you fired.
There are two main reasons a coworker may want to get you fired.
1) You are the weakest link.
You are the ball and chain around the ankle. The noose around the company’s neck. The swampland in Florida. You get the idea. You are dragging the company, team, or project down. Because of your lack of enthusiasm, effort, or integrity – you don’t contribute anything at work. Others have to pick up where you dropped the ball. Further, because you may be working as part of a team, maybe no one else at the company (your boss, HR, the owner) knows you are a slacker except for your immediate coworkers. So, they not only are doing your work, but also are covering for you. If you are not striving to make things better in life (at work, at home, in your personal relationships, with your coworkers), you inevitably make them worse.
2) You are the link maker.
You illuminate the forest. You venture upon untrodden paths. You are a leader. An idea person. A do-er, not a dreamer. You are grounded and centered and whole. You conceptualize creative, cost-effective, profit-generating, soul-stirring ideas and you bring them to fruition without a hitch. There is a light bulb above your head that is constantly going “on” with new ideas to enhance, improve, enlighten, and inspire others. You leave things better than you find them. You don’t even notice (let alone care) about all the green-eyed gossipers at the waterfountain ~ you are there (HERE, in life) to create, to do, to be of service to others.
Now that you know the two reasons your coworker(s) want to get you fired – because you are either a lazy lounge lizard or a firefly –
what do you do?
1) You know you and your intentions better than anyone else. If you are a taker, a slacker, a lounge lizard, make the decision IMMEDIATELY to get your act together and start contributing to the team. A simple way to do this? When you are done doing what is expected of you (whatever that task, responsibility, or project is), simply ask a coworker, “Do you need any help with that?” Start noticing and offering others your help and assistance. DON’T talk about the new and improved you, just be that person. Or don’t. Let them get you fired and then you will feel what real work is all about – trying to sell yourself and secure another job!
2) If you are the creative spirit with a skip in your step and joy in your heart, keep being you. If your boss falls for your coworkers’ behind-the-back gossip and/or doesn’t notice all the wonderful things you have done for the company, start thinking about bringing your skills and efforts elsewhere. You don’t need to quit (let them fire you so you can collect unemployment), but you do need to be prepared and aware of what is going on. If you do get fired or let go because suddenly the company is going to “downsize”, no big deal. Someone with your spunk and faith is undoubtedly meant to be more and do more! You’ve always wanted to start your own business from home where you can sport your PJs and take breaks to rub your dog’s belly anyway; embrace the opportunity if it is given to you! (And look at it like that! Life is too short to spend time around jealous, insecure, lost souls – leave the whirling dervishes by themselves – move forward beyond them.)
